Partnership of the Pocket Poppet

The ‘pocket sweater’ idea was keeping me awake at night and we needed to come up with a name that we could trademark. Easy enough you think?! Well let me tell you, it’s not that easy!! After Karen and I threw a bunch of names around and considered suggestions from friends we sat down for our meeting with Tammi and as we were across the table from each other the name popped into my head! Right before Tammi walked into the office I blurted out to Karen ‘Pocket Poppet!’ She liked it! It summed it all up and made sense. In that short space of time we had to come up with not only a name that we could trademark but also a company name. Here it was….H&K The Poppet Co. We hired Tammi that day and she put together the H&K The Poppet Co partnership agreement. It was official and so were we! We were learning an awful lot in a very short space of time and it never stops! Written by: Karen By the time we met with attorney Patrick Richards, Helen and I were starting to realize that our idea would take on a life of its own. Even though we had both had several careers in our past, in various fields, and with various skill sets, we had no idea how much we didn’t know about the garment industry. Yes we were giddy about Patrick’s reaction to our concept ‘Poppet’; but where to go with it? How do we get it made? The path was laid out for us with the guidance of many helpful...

Serendipitous Beginnings

Karen took the train to Chicago, I picked her up from Ogilvie and prepared to meet Patrick at his office in the Willis (still the Sears Tower to me!) Tower. We wanted to see what he thought of the idea and if it was something that we could/should patent. I had researched a lot on line for previous patents for anything that may be similar, but could not find anything other than packable jackets and bags etc. There was nothing out there that you would want to wear indoors or at a restaurant etc. We met with Patrick and gave him the background on the idea. As we spoke I put the second edition prototype now with a crude but machine sewn (by Karen) red polyester pocket on the desk, and at the appropriate moment ‘popped’ open the pouch to reveal the garment inside . The look on his face was priceless! He couldn’t believe that the garment was inside the pouch! He said it was one of the best inventions that he had seen and that he needed several for his wife as he would often have to purchase something to keep the chill away when they were traveling or on vacation!  We could hardly contain our excitement at his enthusiasm but wanted to remain professional, until we got into the elevator that is, where we were like two giggling school girls! Patrick gave us the boost to move on and we started on the paperwork to file for a patent pending… Patrick told us that he is part of a network of about 30 attorneys in Chicago that like...

We need a Patent Lawyer !

I contacted attorney Patrick Richards at Richards Patent Law. He was the first Chicago patent attorney that I came across and after briefly reading some info on his website and seeing that he offered a free initial consultation, I was in! I am usually a person that researches and goes back and forth before deciding on choosing someone like this, but as with this entire process, not only do doors seem to miraculously open, there are people there to greet and guide us! Patrick and his wife were on vacation, but he graciously responded to my email and after we set up an appointment, I read more about him. The reviews and testimonials from clients were awesome and when we met him we knew why!   ...

Pocket Poppet Partners…

Written by: Helen After putting together the bits and pieces, I took it up to Wisconsin and ran into Karen again. I said to her that I had been thinking about our idea and had put together a prototype. She said that she was still thinking about it and not only did she love the idea, but was willing to invest! We agreed to sit down the next day and have a serious conversation about the ‘pocket sweater’ idea. We met the next afternoon and after a few hours of bonding and sharing stories and ideas we agreed to become partners. From my perspective, I could not have wished for a better partner. Karen is an amazing person, partner and friend. Written by: Karen Helen and I decided to have a meeting at my home to formalize plans and to form our partnership. As it turned out I was glad that we were not in a public place because we really bared our hearts, hopes, and dreams with each other. Coming to this decision from two very different beginnings, two very different journeys in our younger lives, we had arrived at the same point at the same time. Both of us needed at outlet for creativity, strength and resolve for our current situations, and something great with which to look forward to with anticipation. I have read many inspiring stories about and by women in their midlives starting something new and finding success , not just financially, but emotionally too. It is my wish for H&K The Poppet Company to fill my life and Helen’s life with pride of...
