Our first retailer….

I started researching modeling agencies so that we could find the right models for our shoot and luckily I have a friend in Chicago who is a GREAT photographer! One less thing to have to worry about. My friend Bethany Fritz from Maypole Studios Photography would be our photographer and it was great to be able to ask her advice on how to go about things as again, this is something that Karen and I do not have experience with. In my earlier life, I had done some modeling for print and some voice over work, but had never been on the other side of the camera , so her advice was invaluable. Bethany also recommended a model that she had previously worked with , her name is Ashlynn McBride. We were originally only going to go with one model, but Bethany suggested that it would be better to have two for the type of shoot that we were doing. I set to work to find the second model and after going through several agencies and many faces, the one that stood out was Connie De Bie who was with Grossman & Jack in Chicago. She has a great smile and a very appealing look that we felt would be great for our...

Protoype development continues…

I took home a sample Poppet and washed it and hung it to dry to see how it would all look. We had an issue with the pocket ripping off one of the early prototypes. It was good that it happened as it help us to go back to the drawing board and make sure that it was all secure and attached perfectly in the next prototype – it was scary when I happened ! I felt like I probably looked like one of those cartoon characters whose eyes pop out of their head and then go back in again, after I looked in the washing machine and saw a Poppet with no pocket !! The finished sample which I washed in a gentle cycle with cold water , came out perfectly and needed no ironing after it was hung to dry. During the next few weeks we started to work with Jennifer at V.Mora , she was now in charge of textiles and Abi Campbell had jumped in and helped us with everything that Ellen had been helping us with previously. We had some issues with interfacing for our ‘ Au Naturel’ Poppet as we were having to use something different that we were using for the dark and colored Poppets. We had to go back and forth a little, but Jennifer helped us out and kept us on track. I was anxious to start production but we still had some loose ends to tie...

Back In Chicago…..

Happy New Year! Back to Chicago and back in the swing of things , now we are getting quotes back from the manufacturers and have to make a decision who to go with . We have been recommended to go with the manufacturer that works best with knits. Knit fabric is not so easy to work with as it stretches something that has to be taken into consideration when cutting. The fabric also has to ‘sit’ and settle first .Manufacturing in the USA is not inexpensive but we definitely want to keep it here. We are also very lucky that the one that we decided to go with is only a ten minute drive from my apartment! Karen called me with a little surprise on the morning of the 2nd! She had been driving and listening to Joy Cardin on NPR early in the morning and there was an author named Marci Alboher talking about her book called “The Encore Career Handbook: How to Make a Living and A Difference in the Second Half of Life”. Karen called in to the show and got on the radio! She told Joy about the new business and how exciting it was and Joy was quite intrigued. Click here for a link to the conversation. Needless to say, we will be sending a Pocket Poppet to Joy , once we have them in our hands ! The next week is spent going back and forth tweaking label designs, choosing which company and quote to go with and then finding out that the original red color that we chose is not in stock and...
