Fortunate Discoveries

During my time working at Trattoria 10 , I met some great friends. One of which Jhenai Mootz -who no longer works there – is a very talented and creative lady. She works at a gallery called Fortunate Discoveries and fortunately ( pardon the pun) for us a space has opened up and we are putting The Pocket Poppet in there for sale! Yay ! Our first retail space ! Karen’s fiancé Mike and Karen rented a truck and drove down from Wisconsin so that we could do the store installation and pick up The Pocket Poppets. I did a bunch of running around in the morning and met Karen and Mike. We just had enough time to start painting the wall and started on the store installation. Mike and I left Karen at the gallery and went off to YS Apparel to collect what we thought would be 1100 Poppets....

YS Apparel – Our Chicago Manufacturers

2pm -We arrived at YS and obviously there was a bit of a communication problem! There were only about 200 ready ! Practice the yoga breathing here!  This is manufacturing by hand! – We waited as more were finished and took some photos of the very hard workers at YS Apparel. The place is like a Poppet factory . Everywhere you turn there a people making Poppets! It’s like a well- oiled machine led at the helm by Mr and Mrs Yoon. We have such deadlines to meet and I have a venting session to poor Mike in the truck on the way back ! He listens very calmly and by the time we get back to the gallery and have to tell Karen the news , I’m more contained ! It’s just more work than we need right now and we rented a truck as well as having a store wanting them tomorrow in addition,we can’t deliver the whole order as anticipated. Did anyone say ‘STRESS!!’ Ultimately, we get it all sorted out and I will go back tomorrow to collect more and Mike has generously offered to drive down again from Wisconsin after work and collect the rest - hopefully !! Thanks again Mike – you went above and...
At The Lake

At The Lake

Hello Poppet Photography by Bethany fritz, maypole studios Photography Can two friends start a business over a cup of coffee? That’s exactly how the Pocket Poppet was born: in a coffee shop here in Williams Bay. lastAugust,HelenTylerandKaren Krolow met for coffee and conver- sation at Tickled Pink Coffee Shop and Bistro in Williams Bay. Karen had been out to dinner the night before and was tell- ing Helen how she had been so cold in the air-conditioned restaurant that she couldn’t enjoy her dinner. Helen agreed that she often had the same experience, and for that reason kept a small sweater in her purse. She pulled the sweater from her purse, wrinkled and smudged. “Someone should invent a sweater that stays neat and clean in your purse,” she commented. There was a pause as the two women considered that statement. A serious plan began to unfold in the fol- lowing weeks as both Helen and Karen continued to think about the idea. After further discussion, Helen cut a pouch from shower curtain fabric and attached it to the inside of an old cardigan with safety pins. Karen, proficient with a sewing machine, created a sample sweater to take to a pat- ent attorney. The patent attorney understood the inven- tion immediately, remarking that his wife would want one in every color, as he had purchased wraps for her on more than one occasion while traveling or out to dinner. The result is the Pocket Poppet, an open drape front cardigan that folds into a self- attached pouch (patent pending) for storage while on the go. The pouch is water-repellent...
