American Made | Poppet Style
We are American Made. It’s important for us to not only talk about our garments being handmade, but also share pictures of the lovely hardworking sewers, that piece together every Poppet. We are American Made , we truly are and that is something that we are very proud of. It takes a lot of time and attention to detail to make our packable garments look their best and function well.
Shown here are the credit card pockets , which are individually hand cut and then sewn together. The next step is to sew one of these into every larger pocket, which is then attached to the garment.
Each part of the pocket is carefully put together with precision detailing, Shown here : Part of the pocket making process at our Chicago cut and sew facility, YS Apparel in Ravenswood.
The pocket is made from a fabric called Ripstop. This fabric is soft , water repellent and tear proof. This makes it the ideal textile to pack our garments into, keeping them protected when stored in a carry-on bag, purse, suitcase, stroller or at the office.
Here is the Sapphire Blue Classic Poppet in the making .The fabric that we use for our Classic style cardigans is also American Made. We purchase only the finest knit jersey from Sextet Fabrics is New York for the Classic Poppet.
Sextet Fabrics was founded in 1971 by Ron Ross and five other partners. All of the partners had extensive experience in textiles. Being the end of the go-go Sixties, and there being 6 partners, the name Sextet was chosen. A Sextet is a group of 6, usually associated with vocal or musical instrument groups, but in our case the name worked.
As the years progressed Sextet became involved in the knitting and dying of our own fabrics, and also owned knitting machines and some finishing equipment. We also represented a knitting mill specializing in intimate apparel fabrics, known as Hyde Park Industries. During the 1990’s Sextet was the largest knitted wool converter in the country.
Today, Sextet is primarily a domestic fine gauge knit converter. We produce fabrics to order, and also stock almost a half a million yards of fabric for immediate delivery. The company is now owned and operated by the next generation, Barbara Ross and Gordon Stern.
KenDor Textiles, founded in 1953, was named after Ken and Dorothy Gregson. The conception of the company in the context of a family is representative of our commitment to quality service, building relationships, and integrity. This attitude has always been central to our business philosophy. Now, in his 30th year with the company, Paul King has stepped in to guide KenDor into our specialty of recycled PET yarns, eco-friendly fibres, sustainable growth, and organic sources. The industry has changed immensely over this period of time, and Paul’s experience has helped cultivate KenDor into the innovator in the marketplace that it is today.
The sewers at YS Apparel are so detailed. Owners Mr and Mrs Yoon are experts , always working to the highest standards, especially with knit fabrics. We love to stop by and see how things are going and oversee production ,as well as maintaining quality control.
We make our patterns and cut and sew our garments in Chicago. We enlisted the help of V.Mora , a Chicago based fashion consulting company to keep up with the demand of our garments. Julie Luther is the pattern maker extraordinaire at V.Mora , who help us bring our American Made award winning designs to life.
We are two women entrepreneurs, who had an idea and are making it happen, With the help of many local sources, we aim to deliver on the highest quality , innovative, packable garments for women , that are truly American Made !
